Peshawar Nov 26, 2021: The Donor-funded TVET Sector Supported Programme organized the inauguration ceremony of Centre of Excellence in Hayatabad, Peshawar to handover state-of-the-art CoE to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (KP TEVTA). The establishment of five Centres of Excellence is a collaborative initiative of the National and Vocational Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the TVET Sector Support Programme, which is funded by the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
The CoE Peshawar was handed over to KP TEVTA in presence of the chief guest, Advisor to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mr. Abdul Karim Khan, Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Pakistan, Her Excellency Ms. Androulla Kaminara, Cluster Coordinator for Training, Sustainable Growth and Decent Employment Opportunities, GIZ-Pakistan Mr. Olaf Handloegten, Managing Director KP TEVTA Mr. Sajid Iqbal, representative from the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany Ms. Antonia Peters. This CoE in Hayatabad which seeks to foster excellence in training delivery for youth and TVET practitioners will now be assisting in the development of a competent workforce to win better job opportunities. In total, five centres of excellence are being upgraded in Islamabad, Lahore, Kotri and the Hub; of which CoE Peshawar is the first one to be launched. These Centres of Excellence are upgraded in order to provide a cascading model of teachers’ training, upscaling of skills for trainees, provide modern lab facilities, career counselling and job placement services under one roof.
In the opening remarks, Cluster Coordinator for sustainable growth and decent employment opportunities, GIZ Pakistan Mr. Olaf Handloegten, said that “we are extremely happy to see the CoE in Peshawar now ready and being handed over to the Government of KP to set an example for all the other regions in Pakistan imparting excellent trainings to teachers and trainees”. Stating about the TVET Sector Support Programme in the ceremony, MD KP-TVETA Mr. Sajid Iqbal said that programmes like TVET SSP are essential to open opportunities for youth to compete in the national and international labour markets. The Provincial Technical Education and Vocational Training Authorities (TEVTAs) in close collaboration with the TVET Sector Support Programme are equipping many young people with competency-based trainings and preparing them for employment opportunities for skilled workers.
While talking in the ceremony, the Representative from the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany Ms. Antonia Peters said that “on behalf of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, I see a great potential in not only relying on jobs but entrepreneurship models and SME development for people to benefit from economic opportunities especially in areas such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. With the initiation of activities in this centre of excellence, young men and women can come forward and learn innovative skills”.
The ambassador of the EU Delegation to Pakistan Her Excellency, Ms. Andruolla Kaminara said “I congratulate to all stakeholders involved in the process since this was a challenging job; but we are witnessing its completion. Great responsibility now lies upon the management of KP TEVTA who have to carry out the legacy and build more CoEs in KP following this as an example. I am proud to mention here the results of tracer study for KP, which depicts a 57% employment rate for TVET graduates of Competency-Based Training & Assessment. This proves that CBT is key for employment boost and economic growth”.
Addressing at this occasion, the chief guest, advisor to chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mr. Advisor to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mr. Abdul Karim Khan said “One year back when we all were together in the ground-breaking of this facility, we anticipated the extra-ordinary training facility as a gift to KP government and I am happy to witness and accept this from European Union and the governments of Germany and Norway through the TVET Sector Support Programme”.
With the establishment of the CoE in Peshawar and four more CoEs in ICT, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, TEVTAs across the country will now offer a functional and sustainable model of excellent training of TVET managers, instructors, assessors, career counselling and job placement officers as well as to vocational trainees. The CoEs will be steered with the help of a digitized monitoring system as well as a quality management system based on international good practice.
